Please be advised that the City of Estevan is conducting an Elm Tree Basal Spray program for City owned Elm trees between September 18th and 22nd - weather dependent. This program, along with adherence to provincially legislated requirements will help save our Elm trees by reducing the elm beetle populations, which is a known vector of Dutch elm disease. The chemical being used is Pyrate 480 EC and it will be applied to the bottom 50 cm of City owned Elm trees only by a licensed pesticide applicator. The chemical will be applied under low pressure, minimizing the possibility of drift. This chemical is an accepted standard for municipal control of the beetle.
The treated trees will be marked with a spray painted dot for visual confirmation of treatment. Residences with treated trees adjacent to their property will receive an information flyer dropped in their mailbox. City owned elm trees are spread throughout the City, with higher concentrations throughout the Southern, Hillside, Pleasantdale and Cemetery areas. If you have any questions or concerns with this program, the chemical being used, or information on treating privately owned trees, please contact the City of Estevan Parks Division at 306-634-1880.
